The decision to register for a Half Marathon was a huge one for me. Why? because i haven't ever ran or participated in an event of this magnitude so far away from my home. Hyderabad.. it's 1600kms away from Thrissur and i haven't been there before. I decided to message Bharath, a good friend of mine from dailymile, to ask about the hotels there. He replied inviting me to stay at his house! It was so nice of him.
I began my trip via train at noon from Thrissur. It was a 24hr journey and got through it nicely. Bharath called me once i reached the Secunderabad station and told me to come to the Bib distribution venue. Got a bus from there to St Mary's College, Yusufguda. K.P Suresh sir called me while i was one the bus, he had been waiting for me there since last 1 hour! I met him there, he was a very nice person and introduced me to a couple of veteran runners. It was a very good experience meeting them. He helped with the registration as i had no clue regarding it :) It was my first race. He introduced me to Bharath. He gave me the keys to his house, i went there and it was a very clean house. I was really touched by the hospitality and comfort i found there. I had my dinner from a nearby vegetarian hotel and went to sleep early. Bharath was having trouble sleeping early at 9pm and he was a bit tensed about the race. I was tired from the journey so fell asleep fast.
The Race Day
I woke up at around 3am. I was clueless regarding how to tie the timing chip to my shoes and didn't knew i needed to pin the bib to my tshirt. I ended up making Bharath a little late, sorry! But i guess it didn't matter much as we reached there atleast an hour before the race. Met many dailymilers there. Met Nikhil, i didn't recognize him though. Was great to meetup. Met Ram sir, KP Suresh sir, Sunil Venkitesh and many other friendly faces. Saw Ridhima standing near the starting point but i wasn't sure it was her. Saw Umesh sir but he was pretty far from me.
The run started at 6am. It was great to run along so many people. I made a newbie mistake and ran a bit fast in the initial stages. As a result started losing stamina once the climbs started at around 5kms. It was a steady climb with most of the run over flyovers. The running area had been nicely cordoned off and i had a whole lane to run! Hats off to the organisers and the Hyderabad Police. Ran along with Sunil for a while and later paced up. What i didn't expect was the continuous climb which was awaiting me after 5kms.. :) It was tough to run uphill for 16kms. But some how i made it. And felt good.
This was the 2nd race of my life! Always been the shy guy who's scared of sports. Finished the race (21kms) in a time of 2 hour 40 minutes. The route was incredibly steep with lots of fly overs. Some how made it to the finish in an okay time.
Everyone who finishes gets a medal. So i got one too! The first sports related medal of my life :)

The air there felt so fresh that i felt it could cure any illness in an instant! :) It's a shame that i've never been there after living close to it for 22 years! Will run there soon.

Half Marathon 11
Route: Westfort - Puthur - Peechi
Distance: 21.73 km, Time: 02:31, 06:57 pace
Ran in the rain in an unexplored route to Peechi reservoir. Completed my 11th HM+ run since i started running 5 1/2 months back i.e in Feb.
Stats in 2011: 2278kms i.e 1544km running, 456km cycling, 278km walking including 1FM, 11 HM+ runs, one century ride (130km) in cycle.
Began the run in heavy rain. Decided to go through an unexplored route (puthur) to Peechi Dam. Half of the run was through small beautiful villages in hilly terrain. Used the gps in the phone to find the way. A group of 4 small kids who were going home from church raced me for some time :) I slowed down as they were running carelessly on busy roads. Went back to the usual pace after they reached their home. Many kids were curiously throwing questions at me on the way. Not only kids, even the guy who was sitting next to me in the bus during the return trip and the auto driver who drove me back home from the bus stop. Bought 3 chicken biriyani's for me, dad & mom after getting off from the bus and caught an auto to home as i needed to deliver the parcel while its hot. I guess i earned the heavy meal :) http://connect.garmin.com/activity/102686860

I'm back to using English. why? Because it takes ages to type in Malayalam and i don't have that patience :)
Since its Monsoon season in Kerala, fevers are on the rise and the rush in the OPD is increasing. Had around 70 patients in the opd in the morning which is quite moderate when compared to the real rush days. Even if there's a rush in the OPD i do make sure to spend adequate time with every patients so that they are satisfied when they go out of the OP, i try my level best to smile even if the rush is dizzying. Nothing feels better than the genuine smile on their faces. Feels like my life has some sort of a significance in this vast world.
Conducted a fever detection camp in Laloor. The place near the corporation waste dumping ground. This is the third camp i've been conducting there since last 2 months, i.e since the monsoon set in. One camp was a big one, organized by myself and my great support staff with no support or funds from the higher health department. Thanks to Thrissur corporation, Ahalya eye foundation and the ward counsellor we were able to arrange free cataract surgery to 8 poor patients. The other 2 camps including today's were smaller one with a single doc i.e me. One was conducted in an Anganwady very close to the trenching ground and the second one in the Laloor community hall. There was a good attendance in the camp with 75 patients this evening. Was a bit tired towards the end of the day though. Everyone there is looking at me like i'm some kind of great doc or something when what i do is what every other doc do! I've been working like this even during my house surgeoncy but no one really cared or appreciated it. Now it feels good to be some one who's loved by everyone. Adds a meaning and purpose to my life.
My head's spinning a bit, don't know why. Need to sleep.

Jul 17, 2011 @ 01:22: Woke up after a good sleep. Had dinner. Now going to sleep again :)
The movie was good. It did justice to the book, except for the final scenes which didn't exactly reflect the emotional intensity of the book. So surprising to see the changes in the movie, like Ron and Hermione allowing Harry to go to the forest and die. Ron's face doesn't even flinch when he says good bye. Same with the final scenes when un-necessary hand to hand combat between Potter and Voldemort has been pictured. Only Neville seems to be upset on seeing Harry's dead body. Ron and Hermione just looks in disbelief. No emotional expressions apart from that. The movie has indeed honoured Snape though, and i'm glad to see that.
So in short, its a good watch but don't expect it to be as good as the book.

It was not a professional event, but a training run.
